Alisen Herman
Alisen holds a BFA, Rhode Island School of Design and is studying for a MA in Teaching Art. For over 25 years, Alisen's career was in graphic design, art direction and marketing. Today Alisen is a potter and teacher focusing on unique functional stoneware ceramics.
Using the elements from the Earth, Alisen infuses her own energy with each pinch, coil or pull on the clay. She reaches back to her RISD education in graphic design to influence form, function and surface decoration. Earth's elements continue to play a role in Alisen's work through atmospheric firings using salt, soda, and wood, in high temperature gas kilns. These result in lucious iridescent surfaces kissed with textures similar to citrus, colors of copper, gold and bronze, topped with hand painted drawings of renewal.
Each piece from Alisen's cohesive body of work is a unique work of art that is both functional and beautiful. Alisen shares her mastery of making, expertise and energy through teaching her students in grammar school through retirees.
